The authority for the magnitudes is Harvard Photometry, and its extension to the south pole, vols. xiv, xxiv, and xxxiv of the Annals of the Astronomical Observatory of Harvard College. Argelander sU ranometria Nova is the basis of the boundaries between the constellation areas, and also of the outlines of the historical figures. Behrmann sextension of the constellations to the southern pole on Argelander splan has been adopted on the large maps, and Gould srevision, which supersedes Argelander ssouth of 10 N. declination, for the smaller maps. The designations of the stars follow A rgelander, Behrmann, Heis, and Gould. The added letters of Gould are used except where his revision of the areas places a star in another constellation. The Milky Way is drawn only approximately, based upon the drawings of Heis and Gould. The meanings of the A rabic names of stars are taken from Higgins A rabic Names of Stars. The clusters and nebulae charted were selected from Dreyer sN ew Catalogue, the variables from Chandler sS econd Catalogue, the colored stars from the list inC hambers Astronomy and from the notes in Gould sU ranometria Argentina and other catalogues. The double stars include those within the limits adopted which are catalogued in Webb sC elestial Objects, and those mentioned by Gould and others. The authority for the positions and notes in the table is Crossley, Gledhill, and Wilson sH andbook of Double Stars, and more recent publications of various observers. tT he work has been done independently of other publications, but comparisons have been made with other atlases and star lists in order to secure freedom from error as far as possible.
