To the innumerable persons who, like the author, have led somewhat of a double existence, engrossed for the most part in the trivial pursuits of practical life, yet wandering at times into the region of philosophical speculation, and feeling often, though but seldom and then with difficulty expressing the rapturous impulses of the poet, many of the thoughts and emotions in the following pages, though clad in mean attire, will be familiar as old and confidential acquaintances. Written at intervals during the leisure moments of several years, it was only natural that some diversity of style and sentiment should be exhibited. Except in the earlier pieces, the prevailing feeling which struggled for utterance was that of an overwhelming sense of human insignificance and ignorance, when compared with the infinitude above us and the positive knowledge at present beyond our reach. And whoever reflects cannot be wholly a stranger to this sentiment. For, laying aside the dreams and theories of philosophy, and assuming the existence of an outer world as it appears to us, and that sense conveys correct impressions and science is substantially true, we still find ourselves enveloped in doubt and our sources of information lamentably few.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
