Note to Second Edition WHEN, after years of waiting, this little book first struggled forth in the city of Geneva, under the fostering care of Professor Roget of that University, without an authors name, and wearing an outlandish garb, I could not foresee that a work so handicapped, and from its nature so calculated to daunt the vulgar mind, would so soon find a public. That it has done so is due to the generous welcome given it by Mr. William Archer and Mr. G. R. S. Mead, to whom I am now privileged to return my grateful thanks. At the same time, courage such as they have shown is so rare, and the fear of those Inquisitors of Science, the specialists, is still so widespread, that there must be many readers who will accompany me in my circumnavigation of hope with inward misgivings, unless they be assured beforehand that I have not, as Bacon was charged with doing, written of science like a lord chancellor. For their sake I am encouraged to note that where the archbishops of science have spoken, so far, they have spoken in blessing.
