Any plan or project affecting wildlife habitat must consider the following groups of animals: 1. Endangered and threatened species 2. Commonly hunted and trapped species 3. Species with unique habitat needs who do not easily adapt to environmental changes 4. Ecological indicator species (species whose presence confirms the existence of specific habitat) 5. All native species This assures that wildlife communities and their habitats are given equal consideration with other resources during land management planning for National Forests. To be certain that this happens, the Forest Service is directed by law to monitor habitat and populations within these five groups. Population trends should show if sufficient habitat is being provided. In many ways, the Forest's wildlife management program is already in compliance with the new regulations. For several years management has included all native wildlife species--not just mammals or birds, game or nongame species. A majority of wildlife management projects on the Superior National Forest are accomplished through intensive coordination with timber management. In 1980, over 30,000 acres of land received one or more of the following treatments: harvesting, thinning, site preparation by mechanical equipment, prescribed burning, planting, seeding, or removal of vegetation that was competing with preferred conifers in plantations. Wildlife biologists, working with foresters, recommended management options and assisted in planning and design of most of the 30,000 project acres. Wildlife management is also accomplished through habitat projects spec...
