The Manchester Tactical Society was formed, in 1881, among the officers of what was then the 20th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers and is now after many changes the 8th (A rdwick) Battalion the Manchester Regiment. After five winters work devoted to the study of text-books of strategy and tactics, to war games and to staff tours, the Society found that the most profitable method of study consisted in the solution of problems, and had recourse to the series of Colonel V. Gizycki, which were at that time among the best which had been published. I translated for the Society the series numbered in this volume i to 7, which were worked out during the winter of 1886-7 for the following winter the series numbered 8to 14 were translated by Colonel Rocca, and both series were afterwards published by the Society. No work done by the Society was found more useful or more instructive by its members, among whom were several officers from other regiments than the old 20th Lancashire, notably the late Colonel R. K. Birley, who for many years commanded the Manchester A rtillery. Colonel V. Gizycki swork was written before the adoption of smokeless powder, of the magazine rifle, and of quickfiring guns, and before the practice of indirect fire had become normal for field artillery, yet the situations which he devised and discussed would hardly be affected by these changes, and the instruction to be derived from attempting the solution of the problems is in no way modified by them.
