Neither then nor for a quarter of a century afterwards had any thought of their publication occurred to me. As time passed, and many of these events were imperfectly or inaccurately described in the numerous current publications, corrections of them, which I verbally made, appeared to possess an unexpected interest to those who heard them. I have been told many times, and by those whose judgments are entitled to re spect, that my version of these occurrences formed a part of the history of Mr. Lincoln sadministration, and that their publication and preservation was in some sense a duty.
