Barrili ci informa che avrebbe voluto intitolare Scampagnata epica questo libro - scritto venticinque anni dopo la presa di Roma, dunque per festeggiare l'anniversario di un evento tanto atteso e sofferto -; e sebbene l'idea venne poi scartata per il timore di mancare di rispetto ai tanti che in quella scampagnata avevano lasciato la vita, pure lo spiritello che l'aveva ispirata resta a informare le pagine di una narrazione che ha assai poco di militaresco e molto, piuttosto, delle "note di viaggio": Barrili racconta infatti l'itinerario da Genova verso Roma con frequenti indugi - più da gita turistica che da marcia militare di trasferimento - su luoghi, personaggi, memorie storiche e letterarie.
