Epictetus was born into slavery in ancient Greece in 50 AD. He founded his own school of philosophy and became one of the foundational thinkers of Stoic philosophy. His discourses were transcribed and shared by his student Arrian and his work has influenced countless readers over the centuries, from Marcus Aurelius to Tom Wolfe.

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was Roman emperor from 161 to 180. He was the last emperor during the Pax Romana, an era of stability within Rome. Marcus wrote Meditations, a series of reflections for his own guidance and growth, between 170-180 while on campaign. His writings reflect the stoic philosophy of the time and have become a classic of Stoic thought.
