Marie Bonaparte embarked on a scientific career with as severe social handicaps as the familiar starving poet in an attic; that they were of an opposite form is irrelevant for their effects. Nor has she confined herself to technical studies, though few outside France are acquainted with her contributions to poetry and literature. A wonderful record of achievement. This original investigator and composer has also a practical side that has been of great value for the development of psychoanalysis. Her pupils can testify to her skill as a training analyst, and at critical moments she has played an essential part in holding together the French Society in its various trials.
