Dr. Palacio graduated from U.C. Berkeley, did her dietetic internship at Mills College, and received her doctorate from Kansas State University. Always an advocate for professional association involvement, her own past activities include serving as president of both the Hawaii and California Dietetic Associations, delegate to the ADA House of Delegates from both Hawaii and California, a member of CADE and the RD exam writing panel, and she has served on numerous other state and national committees.Following a successful career in several areas of dietetic practice, Dr. Palacio began teaching immediately after her internship at Mills College by staying on the internship faculty. A move to Hawaii found her teaching at Kapiolani Community College and the University of Hawaii. With her doctorate she began fulltime teaching at Cal State-L.A. and then Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. At Pepperdine she held the Flora Laney Thornton Endowed Chair in Nutritional Science, was Assistant Dean of Teaching, and founded the Center for Teaching Excellence. She recently retired as Professor Emeritus from Pepperdine. Deborah Canter, PhD, RD, LD is Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics at Kansas State University, where she has been on the faculty since 1977. She has served in numerous capacities within the American Dietetic Association including national secretary for the Dietetic Educators of Practitioners Practice Group and 4 years on the ADA Board of Directors as Chair-Elect and Chair of both the Council on Education and the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Her newest position of service is as a member of the Board of Director’s Education Committee, a group which provides leadership for the future of dietetics education.Widely recognized as an excellent teacher and speaker, Dr. Canter was the recipient of the American Dietetic Association's Medallion Award in 2002 and the ADA Foundation Award for Excellence in Practice in Dietetics Education in 1997. She was also recognized in 1991 as the Professor of the Year for Kansas by the Carnegie Foundation’s Council for the Advancement and Support for Education (CASE).Dr. Canter received her B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with food systems management as her area of interest and expertise.
