The United States of America is a safe haven for terrorists. Open borders and weak identification standards are creating conditions for terrorists to enter the country and operate with impunity until they are ready to strike. The DoD must establish and hold three critical lines of defense to reduce the opportunity for an attack to take place here in the United States. The first line of defense is to deny entry both at the borders and overseas. The second line is to prevent terrorists from freely moving within the United States. The third line of defense is in denying access to targets on US soil. The author makes a case for a national ID card, based on biometric identifiers and how it provides a solid foundation for all three lines of defense and in doing so provide increased personal security to all Americans without compromising liberty and freedom. A national ID card will counter terrorism and secure the homeland while protecting individuals from identity theft, which is a win-win for everyone except the terrorists. The European Union has embraced biometrics and national ID cards and is leading the way in combating terrorism on their soil. The US requires many nations to implement biometric ID standards into their travel documents before allowing foreigners into the US.
