The study of psychology has for a long time been looked upon as an essential phase of the professional preparation of the teacher. The following chapters represent an attempt to formulate psychological principles in terms of conduct or behavior. The authors believe that this functional point of view in psychology offers a helpful perspective upon the problems of classroom teaching, explaining many of the phenomena with which every teacher must deal, and which, unexplained, tend to irritate and confuse; and providing at least a few guiding principles that may be directly app Hed to the solution of troublesome problems in instruction and management. It is hoped that the book may prove useful to the large numbers of young men and young women who each year enter the service of the public schools. It has, indeed, been written with a distinct recognition of the immaturity and inexperience which these beginning teachers represent.
