Synopsis
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

First Edition, and the consequent demand for a second, permits the realisation of the hope expressed in the Preface of the First, the publication of a Manual worked out on the basis of the Gospel of John, and the necessary terms in daily use. This Manual is the product, as it ought to be, of class-room work, but it has not been tested with successive classes. Under the circumstances, it is the best that could be done. Special thanks are due to Rev. Henry For man for reviewing the book, and seeing it through the press. The Manual is the result of fifty odd years of language study, but it is particularly the outgrowth of experience in learning, and helping others to learn, Urdu and Panjabi. It owes most to a severe lesson from Providence that ears and not eyes were given us to learn languages, as well as to further sick-leave leisure to prosecute these studies. From books, Prendergast sidea of a definite speed standard of attainment has been most helpful. Sweet s Primer of Phonetics gave the clue to analysis of sounds. Many, many methods have been examined, and the student may find nothing that seems to him new, for it is possible to parallel many of these ideas with those from other sources.
