Présentation de l'éditeur

Shaksperean literature, there is, so far as I am aware, no English work dealing in some detail with all the dramatists writings in their approximate chronological order. The present volume is an attempt in this direction. Professor Dowden sfine study of Shakspere sM ind and A rt, to which my debt is manifest, is, by virtue of its scope, most intimately concerned with the historical plays and the tragedies, and especially with those elements in them which help to reveal the personality of their author. What I have here aimed at is to discuss Shakspere sworks in relation to their sources, to throw light on their technique and general import, and to bring out some of their points of contact with the literature of their own and earlier times. Hence in the opening chapters I have sketched the rise of theE nglish drama, and have briefly indicated Shakspere sbond of kinship, not only with his immediate predecessors, but with the mediaeval playwrights. And throughout the volume I have given greater prominence than has, I think, been usual to those features in his works which link them to the preR enaissance period.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
