Synopsis
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

When attempting some time since to make an investigation regarding some matters connected with the New York Clearing-house, I discovered, greatly to my surprise, that there was no book which gave, in succinct form, a history of the clearing-houses of the United States or a description of their methods. There have been many articles published separately in magazines and newspapers on some of the more notable clearinghouses, but no attempt appears to have been made to incorporate in one volume comprehensive data regarding the different institutions of this character that are in operation in the large cities of the nation. A knowledge of the workings of these organizations is of great importance to the banker of the present day. A ccordingly, I resolved that if it were a possible thing to do, I would gather together such information of this kind as might seem to be of interest to the banker and the student of finance and publish the same in a form to serve as a convenient reference. A bankers life is a busy one, but in such time as I have been able to devote to the work, I have collected the material upon which this volume is based. It has been my effort to make the work as complete and accurate as possible.
