Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. A fiica- Throughout thern Nigeria it is the language of the greater part of the inhabitants and outside this wide area it forms a sort of lingua franca throughout a large part of Africa north of the equator. The traveller who knows the Hausa language can walk from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea sure of finding in almost every market place which he may pass en route some with whom he can converse. The fact that within recent years that part of Nigeria in which most of the Hausa people live has become an English Protectorate should serve to increase the interest of English students in this language. Before referring to the methods adopted in the production of this dictionary it will be well to state under what auspices the work has been carried out and to what extent it is based upon the labours of other students of the language. The task of compiling this dictionary was accomplished under the auspices and direction of the Hausa A ssociation. On the death at Lokoja, on June 26, 1891, of the Rev. John Alfred Robimson, M.A. (a brother of the author), who had attempted to start Christian missionary work amongst the Hausas, a committee was formed in London to perpetuate his memory and to carry on his work by providing for a thoroughly scientific study of the Hausa
