MOTHER GOOSES MELODY. ppEW books in theE nglifli language have had fo great and perfiftent circulation as the colle lion of Nurfery Rhyrpes known as Mother Goofe sM elody. In prefenting a reprint of the earlieft known edition, fome bibliographical notes may be in place. According to my prcfent knowledge, I feel fure that the original name is merely a tranflation from the French ;that the collection was firft made for and by John Newbery, of London, about A. D. 1760 ;and that the great popularity of the book is due to theB ofton editions of Munroe Francis, A. D. I824-1860. Firft, as to the name. Writing at the great difadvantage of locality, on this fide of the A tlantic, in regard toE nglifh books, I can only fay that I have found no early mention of Mother Goofe as anE nglifh perfonage. She does not appear to be a characfter known before the feventeenth century ;and with due humility, I venture to suggeft that fuch perfonifications of animals feem to be foreign toE nglifh modes. I defire to difmifs, entirely, the idea that Mother Goofe was a name which originated in Bofton, Mafs. In 1870, the late William A. Wheeler edited for Hurd Houghton a beautiful edition of thefe melodies, and then claimed to identify Mother Goofe withE lizabeth Goofe, widow of one I faac Vergoofe orG oofe, and mother-in-law ofT homas Fleet, a wellknown Bofton printer, who came here in 1712, and died in 1758. He married in 1715, and is faid to have printed, in 1719, the firft collection of Mother Goofe sM elodies. It is true that Fleet swife was of the Vergoofe family, and that the name was often contracted toG
