The Legisktnre having recently placed the publication of theD ocuments collected by you in Europe, relative to the Colonial History of theS tate of New-Y ork, under the direction of the Regents of the University, I have been instructed by the Committee of the Regents charged with the subject, to request you to prepare aG eneral Introduction to that work, to be prefixed to the first volume, which is now nearly ready. Your agency in procuring theD ocuments of which this publication is composed, and your thorough knowledge of the whole subject, clearly point you out as the proper person to perform this service ;and the Committee hope that your well known interest in this work will induce you to comply with their request. The Committee, in making this request, have done me an honor which I highly appreciate, and for which I beg you to express to them my acknowledgments. Feeling, as is very natural under all the circumstances, a peculiar interest in the publication of this work, I shall not decline the flattering duty you have asked me to perform. It seems to me that the most satisfactory Introduction to the work would be, mainly, a detailed account of the origin, progress and results of the Historical Agency by which theD ocuments forming the publication were procured.
