The difficulty was increased by ai active party amongst the Friars who sought tremould the Order upon conventional lines, wit but little regard to the primitive Francisca spirit and idealism. The contention whic thus began in the days of St. Francis, becam more acute after his death; it lasted throughou the thirteenth century and eventually resulte in the division of the Order into various families with separate jurisdictions.
