Father Chiniquy was born and raised in Quebec. where he attended the seminary and became a Roman Catholic priest serving in his home country until his immigration to the United States. His interest in temperance revolutionized societal views on alcohol, and he was honored by the Canadian Parliament for his work. He founded a colony of French people in the state of Illinois where he confronted corruption in the church at the highest levels. This autobiography (unabridged 1886 edition) describes his spiritual journey based upon his study of scripture and how it forced him to leave the church he loved for so many years.
