Only the essentials, therefore, are treated in this work, which is planned more as a foundation for the study of Modem English grammar, of historical English grammar, and of the principles of English etymology, than as a general introduction toG ermanic philology. The Exercises in translation will, it is believed, furnish all the drill necessary to enable the student to retain the forms and constructions given in the various chapters. The Selections for Heading relate to the history and literature of King Alfred sday, and are sufficient to give the student a first-hand, though brief, acquaintance with the native style and idiom of Early West Saxon prose in its golden age.
