9781300941842: Bruno Schlesinger, A Life in Letters & Learning

Synopsis

Bruno Schlesinger escaped wartime Europe to America. He taught at St. Mary's College in South Bend, IN. Using the ideas of Christopher Dawson on the importance of religion in society, Prof Schlesinger built a program called Christian Culture to synthesize art, religion, history, politics & society into an interdisciplinary course. Later changed to Humanistic Studies, Schlesinger's Course became the crown jewel of St. Mary's college. For over 50 years the Humanistic Studies program has integrated Christian ideas into the context of the larger world. Nearly 1000 women have graduated with degrees in this broad ranging field. Philip Gleason, professor of history at Notre Dame & longtime friend of Bruno, tells the story of Bruno's early days and academic achievements, and struggles, along the way. Marvin O'Connell, Thomas Merton, Gail Mandell and others share their personal reflections of Bruno P. Schlesinger as teacher, intellectual, father and friend.
