Synopsis

I have collected and rewritten around 300 folk tales in my life. This Spider story from Liberia is my very favorite tale to share with an audience of children. As usual, there are lessons to be learned, and they are usually learned the hard way. Spider, a very crafty trickster, plans to take advantage of a young girl's generosity. Does it work? The Peace Corps is described as the toughest job you'll ever love. I never expected my two years in Liberia would impact the rest of my life as much as it has. It was just supposed to be a two-year experience in Africa. Who knew I'd ever love Africa as much as I do? Who expected me to live there for six years? Who knew how many times I'd return there? (I don't even know the answer to that question.) And, who expected this to be the beginning of my folk tale collecting? Of course, I made lasting friendships through this time in the Peace Corps. The volunteers I've most kept in touch with are Debbie and Amanda. They've helped to edit some of my books over the years. And as far as my Liberian friendships, none have lasted longer than Daniel's. We've kept in touch in spite of a civil war. We were finally reunited when the U.S. Embassy brought me back to Liberia to paint murals with Ebola survivors. These friendships have lasted over decades and across the miles. Every time we communicate, it's like no time has passed at all. I collected folk tales while in the Peace Corps. I never expected the website I created about a few tales would ever win the grand prize in a Microsoft competition. This led directly to the creation of my clip art website, which in turn introduced me to the community murals I create. And, as I color the world one country at a time, I now gather folk tales as I wander the globe. I have no idea how my life would be different if I had not joined the Peace Corps. I don't want to know that either. I'm very grateful for the experience.
