Synopsis

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Those who propose to study Double Counterpoint and Canon should already have acquired the art of writing the various species of Simple Counterpoint in four or five parts, together with a good knowledge of harmony. There seems no reason why the student who has been through this preliminary work, should be debarred the use of the resources of modern harmony when writing his examples. If he has diligently worked atS imple Counterpoint, with its restricted progressions of melody and harmony, he will not fail to feel its good influence, and to apply, as far as is consistent with the greater ireedom he now enjoys, its many valuable precepts. The application of Double Counterpoint and Canon to fugal writing will, in all probability, be the direction in which the student will make the first use of his knowledge of this branch of the art. With this in view the Author has thought it well to choose many of his examples from works of a fugal character. Although it is in this style of composition thatD ouble Counterpoint is most used and most necessary, yet it has often been employed in music not of a fugal character, examples of and references to which are gven in the course of this work, and many opportunities for its happy introduction will be found by those who take the pains to master a subject so necessary and so useful to the true musician.
(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
