Synopsis

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This volume has grown out of a series of articles contributed toT heT imes fromE gypt between October, 1919, and A pril, 1920. I am indebted to the proprietors ofT heT imes for permission to reproduce them, but I have amphfied and to a large extent rewritten them, as there are many aspects of theE gyptian question to which only the briefest reference could be made within the Umits of space allowed to me, however liberally, in a daily newspaper at a time when the world is full of equally urgent questions. As an almost essential preamble to any serious attempt to describe theE gyptian Nationalist movement with which we are confronted to-day, I have reviewed in a few preH minary chapters the story of modernE gypt since that ancient land emerged again little more than a century ago from mediaeval obscurity and almost complete oblivion into the limehght of world history. The present upheaval in Egypt is not merely incidental to the storm of unrest that the Great War has let loose upon other countries besides Egypt, noris it due solely to theB ritish Occupation or theB ritish Protectorate. It has far deeper causes. The Egyptian question is bound up with a large part of the worlds history for the last hundred years.
