Synopsis
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

The collection of materials intended to serve as the basis of a work on theB otany of California was begun under my direction, and with the authorization of theL egislature, in 1860. That the volume published in 1876 and the present one could be laid before the scientific public in a style worthy of the subject, and uniform with that of the other publications of the Geological Survey, is chiefly due to the zeal and liberality of Hon. S. C. Hastings, who solicited and obtained the necessary pecuniary means for this purpose. His fellow-contributors for the present volume were D. 0. Mills, Henry tierce, Leland Stanford, J. C. Flood, and Charles Crocker, all of San Francisco :to them I desire to return my sincere thanks in behalf of botanists throughout the world. J. D. WHITNEY.
