It has been widely felt that the present is an opportune time for malting an organised and systemaiic attempt Uirmestigate that targe group of debatable phenomerta designated by such terms as mesmeric, psychical, and spiritualistic. From the recorded testimony of nutty competent witnesses, past and present, including observations recently made by scientific men of eminence in various countries, there appears to be, amid much delusion and deception, an important body of remarhahle phenomena, which are prima facie inexplicable on any generally recognised hypothesis, and which, if inconiestably estailisked, would be of the highest possible value. The tash of examining such residual phenomena has often been undertaken by individual effort, but nver hitherto by a scientific society organised on a sufficiently broad basis. The above extract from the original prospectus of the Society for Psychical Research, issued in 1882, shows the spirit in which it entered on its investigations, the aim which it set before itself, and the methods by which it was proposed to pursue this aim.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the fascinating world of psychic phenomena, delving into a collection of anecdotes, research, and documented evidence gathered by the Society for Psychical Research. The author examines the evidence for thought transference, or telepathy, as it was then known, both in the form of laboratory experiments and spontaneous cases of perceived communications between individuals. The book explores the history of this concept, tracing it back to ancient times and charting its development through the rise of mesmerism. By meticulously dissecting and analyzing the reports of individuals who believed they had witnessed telepathic events, the author questions the role of chance coincidence, unconscious suggestion, and other factors that could explain these occurrences. The author argues that the existence of telepathy, as a plausible explanation for some of these seemingly inexplicable events, would challenge our established understanding of the relationship between mind and matter. The book offers a compelling investigation into a subject that continues to captivate and intrigue readers, seeking to reconcile the seemingly supernatural with the natural world.
