The nature of the undertaking precluded any elaborate or technical consideration of the subject, and its thorough and scientific treatment was necessarily sacrificed to the requirements of the popular lecture. The subject matter of these lectures is familiar to most lawyers and law students. It is not expected, therefore, that professional readers wiU find originality or novelty, either in their substance or in the manner of their presentation. To the layman it is hoped that they may prove to be of some service in leading to a more just appreciation of the true nature and significance of law, and of the difficulties as weU as the importance of its efficient administration.
