Excerpt from American Government and Politics
IN this edition I have followed the lines of the revision of November, 1913. I have vainly hoped for, but not yet found, leisure in which to recast the entire text. The continued demand for the book is some proof that it serves many people in its present general form, and therefore I venture, for a while longer, to let the main structure stand just as it was conceived ten years ago. I have, however, eliminated a large mass of details.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical foundations of American government and politics, tracing the evolution of its institutions from their colonial origins to the early 20th century. The author emphasizes that the American system of government did not emerge from abstract theories but rather from the practical experiences of English colonists managing their own affairs. The American Revolution, rather than a complete break from the past, served as a catalyst for expanding existing political structures and adapting them to the needs of a newly independent nation. The book explores the development of key institutions such as the governorship, legislatures, and judiciaries in the thirteen colonies, highlighting the similarities and differences among them. It examines the limitations on political participation, including property and religious qualifications for voting and holding office, and how these restrictions shaped colonial society. The author also delves into the attempts at intercolonial cooperation that preceded the Revolution, setting the stage for the eventual formation of a unified nation. By analyzing the colonial roots of American governance, this book offers valuable insights into the historical context that shaped the nation's political system. It sheds light on the enduring legacy of colonial practices and ideas, demonstrating their continued influence on American government and politics in the present day. Understanding the historical foundations of American governance is essential for comprehending the complexities of the nation's political system and appreciating the challenges and opportunities it faces in a changing world.
