This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
The answer to this question will bring us nearer to the core of the social movement than any attempted definition. The French Socialist program begins with the assertion, "Socialism is a question of class." Class distinction is the generator of Socialism. The ordinary social triptych—upper, middle, and lower classes—will not suffice us in our inquiry. We must distinguish between the functions of the classes. The upper class is a remnant of the feudal days, of the manorial times, when land-holding brought with it social distinction and political prerogative. In this sense we have no upper class in America. The middle class is composed of the business and professional element, and the lower class of the wage-earning element.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book's premise is that democracy, still in its adolescent phase as a concept, faces its real test in managing socio-economic problems. The author traces the progression of the socialist movement from the proletariat's economic activism through its political awakening to its modern presence in various social democratic parties. By examining events in France, Belgium, Germany, and England, the author shows how class conflict gave rise to the socialist movement. The latter half of the book contrasts the theoretical strands of socialism, as expounded by utopian thinkers like Owen and Fourier, with socialist political and economic strategies as articulated by Marx and others, emphasizing the power of labor. This book illustrates the depth of socialist thought and activism as essential historical elements in understanding the development of democratic societies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
