Excerpt from College Algebra
The selection and arrangement of topics in this book and the method of treatment represent that which the author''s experience has led him to believe is best adapted to the requirements of a good college course. Of the topics usually treated in college algebras, continued fractions, choice and chance, and probabilities have been omitted, since few applications of these subjects are made until the student reaches more advanced courses. Their omission also gives time for more extended study of such topics as irrational and complex numbers, series, the elementary properties of deter minants, and the properties and solutions of numerical equations of higher order.

It meticulously lays out the principles of the number system, carefully distinguishing between equations and identities, and emphasizing the importance of constructing equivalent equations in problem-solving. With a focus on the "permanence of form," the author explores how basic laws governing positive integers can be extended to encompass zero, negative numbers, fractions, and even irrational and complex numbers. This historical perspective, tracing back to the ideas of Peacock and Hankel, sheds light on the evolution of algebraic thought. The book then tackles the core algebraic challenge: solving equations. It offers insightful discussions on systems of equations, graphical representations of solutions, and applications to real-world problems like maximizing and minimizing values. Infinite series, their properties, and tests for convergence are also explored, along with the powerful method of mathematical induction. Ultimately, this book reveals the elegance and depth of algebra, demonstrating its ability to unlock intricate mathematical relationships and empower us with tools for quantitative reasoning.
