It may appear at first as if too much attention to details is given in the examples on the design of joints, beams, and trusses. It is believed, however, that the importance of care ful study of every detail can only thus be properly emphasized. In practice it seems to be the exception rather than the rule to give the same attention to details of timber structures as to those of steel. In the interest of sound engineering practice it is essential that all connections and details have the same degree of security as the framed members.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact.
