The publication of so small a book, dealing with so vast a subject, certainly calls for some explanation. It is the outcome of a latter plan the ridtculus mus, as some may think, that has issued from a too ambitious undertaking. I had promised a good many years :o to write a book forS onnenschein sL ibrary of Philosophy, giving a comprehensive and connected survey of philosophical first principles, these appear in the light of the most recent developments of thought. This promise may at some time be fulfilled; but the duties of a teacher of Philosophy in a provincial College are not favourable to laie constructive efforts; and several circumstances have made this particular attempt appear less urgent than it once did. The publication of Mr. Bradley sgreat work on Appearance andR eality might well give pause to any one who had a similar design in view. If his brilliant dialectic and subtle speculative insight had failed to produce a convincing scheme of philosophic truth, the prospect was not very encouraging for the smaller fry. On the other hand, so far as he had succeeded, further attempts in the same direction became unnecessary.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book introduces readers to the field of metaphysics and the fundamental questions it engages with. The author opens with the deceptively simple question of what metaphysics is, before delving into the differences between metaphysics and other scientific disciplines and the different methods metaphysicians have used to approach their work. The author then provides a fascinating survey of the history of metaphysics in the West, exploring everything from early Greek philosophy to modern materialism and idealism. The author argues that metaphysics is a discipline that seeks to understand experience as a whole, and that it is essential for anyone who wants to understand the nature of reality. The book concludes with a discussion of the significance of metaphysics for our understanding of the world and our place in it, highlighting how it can provide valuable insights into the nature of reality and the human experience.
