This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating history of Inyo County, California, a region of remarkable geological diversity encompassing both the towering heights of Mount Whitney and the depths of Death Valley. The author meticulously traces the story of this land from its ancient geological formations, shaped by volcanic activity and the remnants of vast inland seas, to the arrival of its first human inhabitants. Native American tribes, particularly the Piutes, played a central role in shaping the region's early history. The book explores their unique customs, traditions, and their complex relationship with the land and its resources. It delves into their hunting practices, food sources, and the significance of the medicine man in their society. The author also examines the intriguing rock markings left behind by these early inhabitants, offering insights into their beliefs and artistic expressions. As European settlers began to arrive, the dynamics of the region shifted dramatically, leading to conflict and ultimately, the displacement of the native population. The book recounts the events of the Indian War, a period marked by violence and tragedy, and explores the subsequent establishment of white settlements and the development of mining operations. It also touches on the challenges of transportation, the impact of natural disasters like the 1872 earthquake, and the ongoing struggle for control of the region's resources. Through its exploration of Inyo County's rich and complex past, this book offers a profound understanding of the forces that have shaped this unique corner of the American West. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of both the native peoples who first called this land home and the pioneers who sought to tame its wilderness. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
