First Edition of this work appeared in 1898. The Second was issued in 1904 and was exhausted more than a year ago. It was considered desirable to delay the preparation of the Third Edition so that the many changes effected last year in connection with Joint Stock Company, Partnership, and Income Tax matters might be incorporated in the work. Many of the articles on pure accounting subjects have been revised and, where necessary, enlarged, while several new subjects have been introduced. As hitherto, I accept responsibility for the whole of the work every line of which has received my personal attention, but I desire to express my indebtedness to my partner, Mr. H. R. Graves, A.C.A., F.C.I.S., and also toM r. W. E. Burnley, B.A., A.C.A., and Mr. F. R. Raymont, A.C.A. (members of the staff and past articled pupils of my firm), for the invaluable help they have rendered to me in connection with this edition. So, to all those (almost without exception) who have contributed to the literature of the profession am I under some obligation, varying in degree, for information and suggestions which I have obtained from their books, lectures, and correspondence. Where I have quoted any of my colleagues I have acknowledged the source in the text. Lastly, I am deeply sensitive of the manner in which the members of the profession have appreciated my constant efforts for the last twelve years to provide them from time to time with an up-to-date book of ready reference.
