Synopsis

A practical guide to how communities shape our sense of right and duty.

This non‑fiction work examines how social life—schools, the press, churches, and everyday interactions—forms moral habits and guides daily action. Through historical and contemporary perspectives, it explains why shared standards matter for the welfare of everyone and how individuals contribute to the common good.

Written for readers who want a clearer picture of ethics in everyday life, it connects large ideas about morality to real institutions and personal responsibility. The book invites readers to consider how education, public discussion, and community norms shape character, and what it means to participate in a moral, democratic society.

  • How groups sustain moral control and why consensus matters.
  • The role of education and the school in developing conscience and character.
  • How the press acts as an educational force and ethical guardian in a democracy.
  • The relationship between individual obligation and social progress.

Ideal for readers interested in ethics, civic life, and the social foundations of morality.

Présentation de l'éditeur

To the practical minded student, whether prospective teacher, lawyer, physician, or merchant, traditional ethics seems to oflF er little in the way of suggestion for the solution of many of our newly created moral problems. To him the discussions often seem formal and abstract. And yet the big fact remains that if these problems are ever to be finally solved, their solution must be worked out in harmony with moral law. The purpose of this book is to suggest in present day psychological and sociological terms a working hypothesis a moral criterion by means of which the different types of moral situations may be met with some degree of consistency. The author has attempted to state in clear and untechnical terms a point of view with regard to the moral life; and has sought to show how it may be applied in dealing with typical moral situations.
