The following treatise has iieen -written in tte hope that it may supply, in some degree, a real want. For several years the author was a teacher of Logic, in theM ilitary Academy at West Point, where the subject was thoroughly studied by the aid of Archbishop Whately stext-book. How much a manual was needed before that work appeared may be known from the significant fact that, as soon as it was published as an article in theE ncycloptedia Metropolitan a, it was eagerly caught at by the community of teachers, and used, unaltered, as a book for college instruction, on both sides of the A tlantic.
