The "Great South Sea" has been a region of romance from the day when De Balboa in the year of grace, 1513, so named the new ocean which burst upon his view as he gazed to the south from the hills above Panama. The exploits of buccaneers, the work of explorers and missionaries, the strange customs and the grace kindliness and ferocity of the islanders, have been the theme of many a well-known writer. The old order is changing and the more sober era of commerce rapidly rising in its place. Having had opportunities of observing both epochs, I wish to portray, as simply and faithfully as I can, the men and the customs of each.
