Excerpt from The Antiquities of Tennessee
The main purpose of this volume is to present the results of recent archeological investigations in Tennessee. When the large aboriginal cemetery near Nashville was discovered and explored several years ago, at the instance of the Tennessee Historical Society, I undertook the duty of preparing a pamphlet illustrating some of the fine types of pottery and other objects from the stone graves; but the material worthy of illustration accumulated so rap idly that it was found impracticable to do justice to it in the modest way contemplated, and the pamphlet has grown gradually into its present proportions. It became necessary to consider the general subject of ancient monuments and antiquities in Tennessee, in order to properly introduce the new material discovered, and thus render the publication useful to a larger class of readers. It seemed also desirable to include a more complete summary, for the benefit of the large number of students in Tennessee specially interested in its antiquities. As the aboriginal remains of some portions of the neighboring states are very similar in character, I have illustrated specimens from these states, when convenient and of interest, and have felt at liberty to include them in the title to this publication.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of the prehistoric "Stone Grave" people who once thrived in Tennessee and surrounding areas. Through meticulous examination of artifacts unearthed from their unique stone-lined graves, the author paints a vivid picture of their daily lives, customs, and artistry. This exploration takes us back thousands of years, offering a glimpse into a society that, while still primitive, displayed remarkable ingenuity and cultural development. We encounter intricately crafted pottery, tools, and ornaments, revealing a deep connection to the natural world and a complex set of beliefs. The author skillfully weaves together historical accounts, archaeological findings, and cultural comparisons to shed light on the Stone Grave people's place within the broader tapestry of Native American history. This book challenges previous assumptions and offers compelling evidence of their unique cultural identity and possible connections to other advanced indigenous cultures. Ultimately, this book invites us to reconsider our understanding of pre-Columbian America and appreciate the sophistication and resilience of the First Americans who called this land home.
