I shall relate only established facts, or facts easy to establish, and shall permit myself to make no conjectures but such -as are entirely plausible. The task as I conceive it has therefore its limit; nevertheless, it is still sufficiently complex to forbid me to embarrass it by the discussion of controverted passages. But wherever the fact is certain and the sayings of Jesus perfectly authentic, I shall make use of them, and shall endeavor to draw from them all that they actually contain.
