Explore the rise of Japan’s labor movement and how workers built a socialist movement under pressure. This nonfiction account outlines the early steps, key figures, and the challenges they faced as they organized, educated, and campaigned for social change.
In this edition, you’ll see how activists spread socialist ideas despite government suppression, how they organized miners and workers, and how international conferences and campaigns shaped their work. It also covers harsh government tactics, including censorship and controversial trials, and the impact these events had on public opinion and movement momentum.

This little book is the first attempt to give to theE nglish speaking public a history of the labor and socialist movement in Japan. It was originally intended for the Internationalist Socialist Review during the year 1917; so that it is necessarily brief and incomplete in the details of events however interesting; but I tried to present the events and their developments. Bearing this in mind the reader will understand the limits of this book. Since I wrote this, many things have happened. Our working classes in Japan have lately awakened. This fact is shown by numerous strikes during the last year. These were mainly due to the influence of the Russian revolution by which our people, especially the working classes, were so greatly impressed and interested.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the emergence of the Japanese labor movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing a fascinating window into the intersection of economic, political, and social forces shaping modern Japan. The author, a prominent labor activist of the era, traces the development of trade unions and the spread of socialist thought amidst the backdrop of Japanese industrialization, a process heavily influenced by Western models and fueled by imperial ambitions. The book details the early successes of the nascent labor movement, including the formation of unions and the publication of labor newspapers. However, the author also highlights the growing opposition from the government, manifested in the passage of restrictive laws aimed at suppressing labor organization. The book explores how the Japanese government's actions, coupled with the burgeoning socialist movement, spurred calls for political reform and universal suffrage. This book offers a unique perspective on the complexities of early labor movements in a rapidly industrializing nation, illuminating the challenges faced by workers in navigating the tension between economic progress and political repression.
