Excerpt from A Graduate School of Geography, Vol. 6
With this awakening in America of a greater interest in geography, it seemed to be most appropriate that this country should hear from the dean of American geographers as to what his ideal would be for the promotion of this field of study in American universities. The accompanying address was delivered to an audience of about twelve hundred people; but it is our desire that it may be read by a much larger num ber, that it may reach all those who are especially interested in this field of study and that they may retain these words from Professor Da in their private libraries. For this reason we have arranged for the publication and distribution of this address. We feel certain it will inspire all in the geo graphical profession to higher ideals and greater activity, and we also trust that it may convince many with administrative responsibility of the greater significance of geographical research and education in this country.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a record of a foundational speech delivered at the dedication of Clark University's Department of Geography. The author, a dean, argues for the importance of geographic scholarship. The author maintains that, while much of the globe had been explored, it had not yet been comprehensively described due to a lack of trained professionals, and proposes the establishment of a graduate school to train them. The author believes that the school should focus primarily on research rather than teaching. The work also discusses what such research should look like and the qualifications and responsibilities of the scholars who would undertake it. The author envisions the school becoming a hub for geographers, with a research staff of nine professors, extensive material resources, and a community of enthusiastic students and visiting scholars. The book concludes by emphasizing the need for standardized and systematized content and methods in the field of geography to increase understanding and collaboration.
