Chinese at the port of Ningpo, with frequent opportunities of travel in the province of Chekeang, enables the writer to offer this unpretending little volume to theE nglish public. The pen-and-ink etchings, contributed by a native artist, are not the least valuable part of the book. They are faithful representations of theN orthern Chinese. The contour of the figures differs much from the prevailing type of theS outh, and affords a pleasing variety to the hackneyed form to which we have been accustomed. The only figures of a foreign cast (for all without the boundaries of the province must be accounted foreign) are those of the fortune-teller in the sketchS ymbolism of Words; and of the phrenologist.
