The author presents his own perspective with openness and practical detail, aiming to help readers think clearly about school, study, and knowledge.

The book surveys major topics in philosophy and education, including psychology, ethics, aesthetics, and religion, and it discusses how these ideas shape classroom practice and student growth. It also looks at the rise of new educational approaches and how they compare with traditional methods.

  • Clear explanations of how philosophy relates to different fields of knowledge

  • Discussion of the New Education and Harvard’s methods, with critical analysis

  • Comparisons between old and new approaches using practical examples

  • Topics ranging from the theory of knowledge to the philosophy of mind and education

Présentation de l'éditeur

The four essays which are now gathered into this volume were originally written for different audiences, and have already been published in different magazines. The paper on The Development of the American University was read before the Round Table of Boston, and that on The Place of the Fitting-S chool in American Education before theN ewE ngland Association of Colleges and Preparatory Schools. A request from the editors of the Andover Review to reply to the presentation, made by a friend and colleague, of another system of higher education than that of which I was the chosen advocate, led to the article onE ducation, New andO ld. The occasion of its production, therefore, accounts for the more special and polemical character of the third essay. The address on The Essentials of aM odern Liberal Education was delivered before the Association of the Alumni of Western Reserve University at the Commencement of 1895. All four of these essays are here published with very few and unimportant verbal changes.
