This book details the history of Ireland from its earliest pre-historic inhabitants up until the early 16th century, with particular focus on Ireland before and after the Norman conquest. The author portrays the island as having been settled by waves of successive migrations. By the time of Christ, Ireland had become a patchwork of warring petty kingdoms, and was still largely outside the influence of the Roman Empire. This isolation meant that Ireland missed out on many of the developments taking place on the continent and the country retained a distinct social and political system with a powerful landed aristocracy and an influential church that had its own unique rituals and practices. The author contrasts the early promise of the Irish church, that sent missionaries to many parts of Europe and played a significant role in the early medieval period, with the abuses and corruption that had crept in by the time of the Norman invasion. The book explores the reasons why the Norman conquest of Ireland differed from that of England, and considers the period of English rule up to the reign of Henry VII as one of missed opportunities and mishandling that led to the development of a largely autonomous and hostile Gaelic Irish culture alongside the English colony.
