This book is a captivating journey of self-discovery through the lens of place. The author, settled on a remote island outpost in the Atlantic, explores the profound connection between personal identity and ancestral inheritance. Through vivid observations of the natural world and musings on the lives of his forebears, he delves into the rich tapestry of family history, revealing how the past shapes the present. The author, a descendant of generations of American pioneers and English landed gentry, reflects upon the intangible legacy passed down from his ancestors, not just through bloodlines, but through the inherited landscape of his soul. He experiences the tangible world through the filter of memory, finding echoes of his New England heritage in the moors of Nantucket, and discovering the spirit of his English forebears amidst the rolling hills of Kent. The authorâ s explorations transcend the boundaries of time and geography, blending personal reminiscence with historical reflection, and drawing connections between the natural world and the human spirit. He eloquently argues that the true richness of life lies not in material wealth but in recognizing the profound interconnectedness of all things, embracing the legacy of our ancestors, and understanding our place within the larger canvas of existence.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
As work interpreting life has taught me, as life sustained by work has given me. I. September, 1909. My first breathing spell in nine years; and during these nine years I have worked steadily, like a dray-horse, in the harness of necessity. Not once in all these years has that necessity loosened so much as a check-rein, and there has been much uphill work, to ease me mercifully till to-day. No wonder I am sitting here in the kitchen of this island home, half-dazed, partly numb, and wholly dumb save for the sound of this pencil moving over the paper.
