Synopsis

Sharpen your thinking with a practical guide to logic that reveals how ideas connect and prove themselves.

Practical Logic, by Daniel Seely Gregory, explains what logic is and why it matters in everyday thinking. It presents logic as a practical science of the laws that govern good thinking, from observing and forming concepts to judging and reasoning. The book guides you through the core forms of thought, the structure of judgments, and the ways arguments are built and tested, all with a clear, step-by-step approach.

What you’ll experience

  • Clear explanations of how thinking happens, and the four faculties involved in judgment and reasoning.

  • Hands-on guidance for forming judgments, testing proofs, and recognizing common mistakes.

  • Practical rules for arranging ideas, classifying concepts, and constructing sound arguments.

  • Examples and exercises that bridge theory with real-world reasoning.

Ideal for students of logic, philosophy, or anyone seeking sharper, more reliable thinking skills.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Logic, as theS cience of theL aws ofT hought, is very widely studied, in the higher schools, as an aid to the pupil in thinking; yet it is the settled conviction of many of the best educators that thisS cience, as it is ordinarily presented, does very little toward training to think or preparing for thinking. In short, there seems to be a growing feeling that it rather serves, in case of the average mind, to cram the memory and paralyze the thinking powers. The author of this volume shares to some extent in this conviction and feeling; hence the present attempt to construct a Practical Logic, by the use of which intelligent teachers may train inquiring minds to correct thinking. The only way to learn to think is by thinking; the only way of training a pupil to think is by making him practise thinking. Assuming the correctness of this principle, Logical Praxis is made the prominent and essential feature of the work.
