It is very possible, and somewhat to be feared, that the following tale, if it attracts any notice at all, will excite the wrath of one party, the ridicule of another, and the suspicions of a third. By all three it will probably be called popish, superstitious, flippant, satirical, and a great many other hard names of the like kind. Now it is clear, that a book must be very bad indeed to deserve all this ;and an author must either have some sinister end in view, or entertain an overweening opinion of its merits or usefulness, to risk the danger of such abuse. It is right, therefore, that his real motive in publishing it should be clearly and honestly expressed.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a unique glimpse into the evolution of church architecture from a medieval perspective through a captivating historical narrative. Set in the 13th century, the story follows the efforts of a pious Saxon priest and a devout Norman baron to construct a new church on an ancient pilgrimage site. The author paints a vivid picture of the beliefs, craftsmanship, and meticulous detail that characterized medieval church building. Rich in symbolism and thoughtful observation, the book delves into the theological and liturgical significance of different architectural elements. It considers the contrast between the plain but dedicated construction of the Saxon church, and the grander and more ornate Norman style that succeeded it, exploring the ways in which each represented the religious sensibilities of its time. Through the detailed account of the church's construction, the author offers an insightful analysis of the mindset and practices of medieval architects, whose work was driven by a profound understanding of their faith and a desire to glorify God.
