Annex Cage UA 13 142.0 OUTLINES OF EDUCATIONAL HISTORY. Definition. Educatio, theL atin word from which our word education is derived, is used by Cicero to represent the eartli as the educator and nourisher of all things. Tacitus uses educare to mean the nursing of infancy, but he limits the use of educatio to training. Quintiliau, the ablest educational author among theL atins, and who was very precise in the use of words, applies educatio to preparatory instruction, but uses institutio to represent what we call academic instruction. Modern Conceptions. A mong modern conceptions, that which was embodied in the ideal of the founders of the Prussian national system has been the most popular among recent writers, and perhaps the least satisfactory. By them education is stated to be the harmonious and equable evolution of the human powers. (S ee Bain sE ducation as aS cience.) All correct definitions of training must refer toP lato, who said, Good education is that which gives to the body and to the soul all the perfection of which they are capable.
