Synopsis

Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Physiology

A considerable number of illustrations have been. Added to this edition; and several of them have been taken, not from the Human subject but from the Rabbit, the Sheep, the Dog, and the Frog, in order to aid those, who, in accordance with the recommendation contained in the Preface to the Second Edition; attempt to make their knowledge real, by acquiring some practical acquaintance with the facts of Anatomy and Physiology.

My thanks are again due to my friend I)r. Foster, for many valuable suggestions, and, more especially, for the trouble he has taken in super intending the execution of the new woodcuts.

Présentation de l'éditeur

It is now more than twenty years since I planned and began to write these Lessons, the object of which is defined in the preface to the first edition. During this period physiological investigations have displayed ait activity unprecedented in history. Here, as in all such branches of natural knowledge, the method of experiment has showA itself to be the one path which leads to truth, and has not only revealed multitudes of novel physiological facts but has suggested wholly new lines of inquiry. As successive editions of theL essons haVe been demanded, it has been Yny effort to incorporate with them such solid acquisitions of the ever advancing science of physiology as fall within their scope, while rigorously excluding all debatable matter or at any rate, carefully indicating it as such.
